A blastocyst is an embryo that has developed for approximately five to six days after fertilization and is ready for implantation in the uterus. Blastocyst culture typically takes about five days after fertilization, during which the embryo is grown in a laboratory until it reaches this final stage of development before implantation. At the blastocyst stage, the embryo has divided into hundreds of cells and consists of two main components: the Inner Cell Mass (ICM), which develops into the fetus, and the Trophoblast Layer, which forms the placenta and supporting tissues.
Embryo transfer on day 3 (cleavage stage) is performed three days after fertilization when the embryo is at an earlier stage with fewer cells, while blastocyst transfer occurs on day 5 or 6 when the embryo is more developed. In the human body, the embryo doesn't naturally implant at day 3 but after reaching the blastocyst stage.
